I do this all the time and have never had a problem w/o setting up the SQL Server in the client network utility. As long as your using the IP address of the server, you should be fine. If you want to use any sort of alias, you will need the Client Network Utility though. I usually set up aliases (Eventually) because it is easier to remember than IP addresses.
