I've broken every finger at least twice, wrists and ankles as well.

It completely depends on the pain-tolerance level of the individual involved, what
type of break, and what activities are done afterwards.

Last summer, I broke the 4th metacarpal in my left hand. (the long bone between the
knuckle and the wrist on my ring finger.)

I broke it playing softball, sometime in the 5th inning (while running the bases). It
hurt some (I couldn't close my glove, for instance), but I thought it was just jammed,
and I "sucked it up" and finished the game. With 2 more hits and 3 RBIs.

Two days later it didn't feel any better (it hurt when I type which is all day), so I
went to the hospital. Sure enough, a fairly serious spiral fracture with some damage
to the cross-hand tendon.

4 weeks later I was golfing and playing softball again.

(Of course, the knuckle is still seriously indented, and the bone healed twisted about
11 degrees, but that was the doctor's bad job setting the hand in the cast that caused
that)

My father had a similar break when he was in his 50s, and it took over a year until he
could swing a golf club without wincing.

So, my take is: If he has a fairly high pain tolerance, and it was a hairline break
and he rested it for two weeks, he could easily be good to go.

Ok..how about if the fingers were dislocated instead?

Yes, come to think of it I fractured my wrist and it was in a cast for
at least a month. And this was a relatively minor fracture -- I chipped
the end of one of the bones banging on a pinball machine.
