I have two GP-100s. They routinely go on eBay for in the $200 vicinity. They are comparable to the Pod / Pod Pro in features and are one of the first digital processors (to my knowledge). Roland's COSM technology has not changed since the GP. I believe the Boss GT3 / GT6 use the same GP-100 technology.
I don't know anything about the V-Amp or Virtualizer, so cannot comment on them. I use flatwound strings, but use the electric so rarely I don't remember what brand. I assume D'Addario. For acoustic strings (my main axe) I use Martin (Not Marquis) 12s.
