Following up on our recent depression and pilots discussion, I thought I'd post this tidbit: A NY Times article reports on doctors and depression, citing a recent JAMA article that concluded: "The culture of medicine accords low priority to physician mental health despite evidence of untreated mood disorders and an increased burden of suicide. Barriers to physicians' seeking help are often punitive, including discrimination in medical licensing, hospital privileges, and professional advancement."
Doctors' rates of suicide range from 1.1 to 3.4 times that of the general public for men and 2.5 to 5.7 times for women. Of 1,300 who entered Johns Hopkins medical school between 1948 and 1964, 26 have taken their lives, with psychiatrists having the highest rates of any specialty. According to a co-author of the JAMA article, Herbert Hendin MD, medical director of the Suicide Prevention Foundation, to the NY Times: "[Doctors] don't pick [depression] up in their patients and they don't pick it up in themselves." This came from a newsletter from this site: http://www.mcmanweb.com/ I highly recommend this site as an info portal for depression and bipolar, if anyone's interested. -d --------------------------------------------------------- Deanna Schneider UWEX-Cooperative Extension Interactive Media Developer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5
