There are a couple of things.
One, if you don't have something like SafeBurn or the like, do not, DO NOT
burn across a network. If you do have SafeBurn, still try to avoid it.
Two, if older CDROMs have trouble reading the CDs, try burning them slower.
This makes the burn "darker" on some drives, and I've had a lot of luck with
this, especially for audio discs.
Three, try a different brand of CDs, preferably with a different dye type.
I'm told blue/silver discs (the ones that look indigo on the bottom) work
best on older ROMs, but I've not tried them. I have had problems with
blue/gold (green on bottom) and cheap silver/silver (silver on bottom, duh).
I've had good luck with Imation silver/silver discs, though.
