She wasn't "the Empress of the Automan Empire", she was the "Ottoman
Empress". A joke about the Ottoman Empire (which participated in WW1 and is
now (mostly) Turkey) (no bird jokes, Ben) and the fact that she rules over
furniture (including ottomans).
Sorry -- I can speak at length about The Tick. I feel sad when others don't
get the joke. :-( Or misspell it, even.
