Best to ask them up front - there seem to be a bunch of mail system
administrators combating spam with a sledge hammer, and losing customers as a
result.

For instance, RoadRunner has a number of persistent open relay servers that pump
spam all day long, and they do not seem motivated to close them down, but they
do block their customer's mail.  Same situation with a few others as well.
