Best to ask them up front - there seem to be a bunch of mail system administrators combating spam with a sledge hammer, and losing customers as a result.
For instance, RoadRunner has a number of persistent open relay servers that pump spam all day long, and they do not seem motivated to close them down, but they do block their customer's mail.
