The other day I was backing up my band's multi-track recordings of our
new album. ( I throw one copy in my safe and the other copy to the singer
). She asked my what the purpose of back-up was. I was at a loss to
explain.

Me says: "What if we want to go back in 10 years to see what we had done."
She says: "Why would we want to do that?"
Me says: "What if the band gets really popular some day and we want to
have a $800 an hour professional remix the album?"
She says: "Wouldn't we want to re-create it from scratch then?"

Not exact quotes, but that was the gist of the conversation. How do I
explain the concept of a back-up? I was trying to think of a mundane
metaphor, but couldn't. Any ideas?
