IT's umm..well..you see they take...computer games and...they...

well...

see..you take a computer game....and you...you film the game...to tell
your story.
And add voice acting etc. during a post-edit.

So..you could take Star Wars Jedi Academy and want to recreate the fight
with Darth Maul right?
So you get one person to play err..Qui Gon whatever and another to join
the game with Darth Maul.

Beforehand everyone knows their places..where they're supposed to stand
etc. A Third player joins the game and uses a cheat so he can fly
anywhere...he acts as the 'camera'. His view of the world is what the
person watching the 'movie' will see.

Then the two 'actors' go through their motions, while the camera
guy(Director) goes through his...moving around to get good camera angles
etc.

They take this video (captures to say an .avi file) and then edit
it...adding speech and other sounds etc.

And then that's Machinima.Machinama.
Get it?

It's a 'new' artform...a new way to make movies, and it has a growing
following.

Game engines such as QUake III that allow Numerous mods and levels to be
created etc. are well suited to the artform.
Since you can set up your 'sets' etc. down to where you want a chair to
be in the room.

And you don't have to be a particular good artist and draw your
'cartoon' frame by frame either. You just need a few people to control
the characters and a script...and then work out camera angles etc.

So say I could have a great idea for a script..and just get you and a
few other people to join a multiplayer Quake game with a script infront
you saying where you need to move, and where you need to face and voila!
Movie time!

I think this explained it..
I hopes.
