The worst thing about point 2 is that he was deported to a country which
is known to use torture and was very likely to use it in this case,
morally very dubious.,

I think there are two parts to this story.
1. The US, for whatever reason, decided to detain and question him. Yes
there were a@@holes about it but, most of the tactics taken are by the
book interrigation pratices.
2. He was exported to Syria either by the US or by Canada. Once there,
he was beaten, tourtured, etc.
Now I'm not saying this guy got a fare shake anywhere. I feel sorry for
this man and his family but I can see how it happened. He was detained
in Sept. 2002 which was one year after 9/11 and if you remember, there
were terror alerts all over the place. And since the US government was
getting reamed by the public to tighten up security and allegations were
flying that 9/11 could have been prevented, I can see why the CIA or FBI
or whoever was acting harsh "just in case".
As I said, I don't agree with what they did but on paper, it makes sense
at the time. Hopefully we can all learn from this and use it to improve
profiling.
And speaking of profiling, anytime I fly I get (ahem) "randomly
searched". After it happened 6 out of 6 times, I finally asked. Seems
that when a male between the ages of 18-45 travels alone, they consider
it a "threat". The figure a single male has nothing to loose so he may
have a shoe bomb and such.

Did you even read the article? He was NOT going to America. He was
going
to Montreal! He lived there.

It's realistic to feel all middle-easterners in Canada are potential
terrorists?
