You need to sell out and go management like I did :)

Pros
Better money.  Limited need for bleeding edge knowledge.  No competition
from kids.  Travel.  Face time with important people.

Cons
Way more meetings, lots of administrative work.  No coding almost (that
sucks).  Late night phone calls.  60-70 hour work week.

We just finished the OSAC annual briefing.  Basically we bring in 800 of our
closest friends for three days of meetings and analytical review of the
worlds security situation.  Last year I was Tim the worker bee for it.
Flipped slides, got coffee, set up rooms.

This year I was the IT manager.

Talked with really incredible people from fortune 500 companies and very
cool gov't agencies (I don't have to think they should exist to think they
are cool :)  I was invited to take part in the Electronic Crime Task Force
in N.Y.  So OSAC will gain a seat next to the NSA, FBI and Secret Service,
and I will be our representative.

Wooo hooo membership in a task force that actually has investigatory and
prosecatory powers.  Should be a real trip.

What was the draw back you ask?  Well the hours I have worked this week were
along the lines of 7 AM - 9:30 PM.  I haven't seen my kids while they were
awake in almost a week (national guard drill last week).

What's the best thing about selling out?   We're selling my Blazer and
buying a Dodge SRT-4 :)  Fastest production four banger on the road today,
ten thousand dollars less than it's nearest competitors.  Eats rice just for
fun. Hoping to get up to a stage 3 Mopar performance upgrade in it and take
her to the 1/4 mile.  Should be able to buy a house in the NOVA area within
two years, less if we sell our rental property in N.C.  Also with the new
position my wife has been able to cut back her hours at work.

Ok, back to work now.

Pieces.

You mean I wouldn't have to answer stupid questions, deal with ridiculous
deadlines, answer more stupid questions. I could work a regular 8 hr. day
instead of these all nighters, pages and cell phone calls. Read 100's of
books to keep up on all the new technology so I could compete against the
16-25 year olds (if your 16-25 you'll understand this better when your 30-40
with kids).... I could go on but why...

I should have been a banker or a doctor...or have been born rich like Paris
Hilton so I could make porn....

Where did I go wrong?!?!
