I could care less about who the UN and UNESCO views as the best places to
live.  Any poll clearly just supports the perspectives that it was trying to
push and so I really don't pay attention any of them.

I always worry about the logic when part of the logic is contains "Those who
know better...."  Those who know better never use this as part of their
argument.

Before discussing the form and involvement of government, it might be more
interesting to understand what results/environment that you are looking for
the government to enable/provide.  For example, my perspective about a limited
involvement of government is based off of the personal view that people need
to take responsibility for their actions.  This means that some will succeed
and some will fail.  I also believe that those who fail at first should be
given the opportunity to try again and that those who are just unlucky should
be helped through their time of trouble.  This creates a trade-off in that
some support is good but too much is bad.  Many countries today have been in
the too much category for many years and a few are trying to move to less is
more.

So while I like Canada and Canadians, I personally prefer to live in the US.
I understand and accept the tradeoffs that each country has made.  Larry,
where do you live?  If in the US, why do you stay here if we totally suck.
Note that I am NOT taking the side of love it our leave it.  That's BS, I am
interested in your view of the positives. It is way to easy to criticize.

What do you hope to achieve by having government more involved in the
marketplace?  What history supports that your wishes would get you where you
want to go?  By the way, where do you wish to go?

I certainly agree with the bed sheets thing.

Andy

For the US I'm left wing. For places like Canada, I'm moderate/center. I
happen to believe in a wider social safety net, greater government
intervention in the economy and significantly less government involvement
in the private lives of the voters. In other words I thin that the
government should be more involved in the market place and less in peeking
out from between the sheets of our bedrooms. I'd rather have to deal with a
Janet Reno than an anal retentive and repressed fundie peckerhead like John
Ashcroft who thinks that the constitution is only good for wiping his ass
  after he's done.

Just a point to consider, while the US has had a certain amount of growth
for the last 10 years, Canada has seen the same amount of growth and in the
last 2 years has continued it while in comparison the US economy shrank. It
has also been declared by the UN and UNESCO to be among the 10 best places
to live in the world. The US barely made it to position 25. Not bad for
what some consider to be a socialist nation. Those who know better actually
call it a reasonably sane country.
