by the operators of several of the Blacklist database operators, however my
servers do not relay (except for authenticated users) thus I avoid showing up on
the blacklists. I filter email for 88 (and growing) domains on a subscription
basis.
About blacklists, there are a lot of them out there, some much more agressive
that others. I utilize 12 of the less agressive ones, and how they work is to
prevent the listed mail server from connecting. The ones that do not appear on
these lists, are then examined by the bayesian filter in Spam Assassin, and
tagged if they are suspect. One of Macromedia's mail servers even get caught
every once in awhile, because MM does not properly manage their mail lists, and
are pretty lax in removing bounces.
In the case of ediets, you can go to http://www.dnsstuff.com and enter your mail
server IP number in the top center box, and it will return a list of black lists
you may or may not appear on. The ones that have you listed, will most often
have a link where you can see the actual sample of the spam that is being sent.
Most of them have instructions for re-testing in order to get the repaired
server de-listed.
In the final analysis, it makes no difference if one considers blacklisting a
bad thing, because they are here to stay, and are being utilized by an
ever-increasing number of mail service providers, for no more reason that their
customers are demanding that something be done about the constant spew of junk
email. If management does not consider being blacklisted a problem, then I
guess that is ok, but I would think that sales would eventually be affected, due
to the delivery failure to recipients that actually want the email will not get
it. It is more of a best practices thing, I guess.
