If we allow people to smoke and to drink and to eat at McDonald's, I fail to seem why same-sex unions would fall into some special category of requiring government intervention.
I think most gays and bisexuals are aware of the potential for social stigma. If they want to come out of the closet nonetheless, I see no reason why the government should play nanny and ask them if they are sure.
A same-sex marriage is no more nor any less a cause of problems than one between heterosexual partners in my opinion. People who disapprove of them disapprove of homosexuality in general, so why would banning the marriage be any more healthy for the psyche of the average homosexual?
