The funny thing is that it's basically a resource on a forked file. A file
can have the normal data part that you see and then it can have metadata in
a hidden attachement. The metadata might include anything from what type of
file it is and what application created it to what custom icon the file has
to any associated data needed for the file to work, like maybe embedded
audio.

It's a brilliant scheme and something that Apple used to really leverage
before OS X. Apple's move away from rich metadata is one of the reasons I'm
down on OS X. It looks though like Microsoft's implementation is being
abused as a carrier method for virii.
