It really is the time to buy. I bought a while ago and got one that could
only do +R (4x) and bought ANOTHER one early that could both +R and +RW (4x)
which I'm still using. but now I see TigerDirect has a quad format drive
(+-R+-RW) for $90.

I'm actually tempted to pick one up - I could save a lot of that money on
buying up the cheaper (but soon to be phased out) "minus" media.

As for the ports it's unclear what they're for at CompGeeks.  There are two
possibilities: one is connectivity options.  There are at least two common
formats for FireWire plufs (one "large" and one "small") - maybe there's
three.  The other option is more likely, I think - the enclosure probably
has one upstream port (connecting to the computer) and two downstream ports
(connecting to other peripherals).

The enclosure I have (Sony branded) looks similar and has that layout -
effectively giving you a (small) FireWire hub in the process.

Subject: DVD Burners..

So, I'm doing a monthly  ( or is that yearly? ) backup of all my data
files and realize it is going to take forever to back up 20+ gigs onto
CDs.  I decided its time for a DVD burner.

My main development computer doesn't have any bays left, so I need to get
an external one.  After some shopping ( both on-line and off ) I find
myself at Sam's Club staring at an 8x (DVD+R) Burner.  ( 4x for most of the
other formats ).  The burner was only $130; which was about $50 less than
the external burner (that didn't have 4x speed).

I made the decision to get the faster internal burner; figuring I'd be
able to find an external case for about the cost differential.  I was close.

This is the burner I bought

This is the case I bought.

Based on what I could tell from my searching, I got a fair deal.  I'm
hoping it all fits together when the case comes.  I'm not sure why the case
needs 3 FireWire ports on it.

  I thought I'd share.
