Start with getting an external USB drive. You will put the USB driver on
the floppy drisk and mount the drive the same as any other.
As far as 'tricks' for moving stuff around go, you could always try:
copy [filename] [destination]...

Usually this means something is wrong with the system hive. On a
desktop, you get a blue screen during startup when this happens. On a
laptop, you often see messages like the one you described.
Boot off a floppy and see what is in the hard drive.
if you need to move a large amount of data and it has a cd-burner, you
might be able to go that route. If not, an external cdrw that plugs
into
a USB port doesn't cost too much, and can be run via a command line.
Also, you don't need the manufacturer's 'restore' disk to restore a
corrupted OS. If it's win2k or XP, there is a whole restore system
that
comes with every edition of the OS and it is vendor independent.

Hey guys, my ex's sister's SOny Viao is displaying a "OS corrupted" or
"OS not found" error. I dont have any experience fixing a laptop.

should I fix it? There are a few files that need to be backed up.

Also, they lost the original restore CD. is it possible to install a
clean new OS using a brand new windows XP cd? :D
