weight would be about 75-80, unless he's REALLY big, anything over that
and he'd have to be a sausage <g> The "rule of thumb" is about 5lbs over
racing weight, so if he's not been out long, then he's only a few lbs
under it at most
The collar is a martingale :)
If you see him sit normally, then try to teach him - Woody sits outside
while waiting to come in (he's a big wimp really), so teaching him to
sit on command was fairly easy once we found treats he liked, but
Charlie is a bit more difficult as she's not food orientated (and scared
of her own shadow)
Woody didn't Roach for months, Charlie didn't do it until we moved to
Georgia, the other thing to show that they're completely happy with you
(on the quieter dogs) is the wagging - but the more friendly ones will
wag as soon as they see you - Woody took 2 months to give us his first
wag...
Charlie didn't really make it in the races (she can't corner as she's
missing a toe which throws her balance off), but Woody raced until he
was 5 and was an Open Class Racer at Wimbledon track - the funny thing
now though is that Charlie is INCREDIBLY muscled and fast, so if she
still had the toe, then she'd be incredible - her sire (a top notch
racer) is owned by Vinnie Jones, ex-footballer and now actor (Gone in 60
Seconds, Snatch, Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels) which is a nice little
bit of trivia about her :)
BTW, ours sleep for a fair portion of the day, although Charlie likes to
watch what we're doing and has a habit of staring at us for hours upon
end
Most "scared" Greyhounds are incredibly un-Alpha, so don't expect them
do dominate any other dogs or people - Greyhounds generally DO NOT make
good watchdogs, and would more than likely either ask for pets or just
lay there watching :P
Try to check with the adoption kennel - some have training and obedience
classes which teach you about how to handle a Grey (they don't respond
the same as most dogs) - we take ours along to the classes, but they
don't really need it, it's just fun to socialize and meet other Grey
owners
Erika will post tomorrow with more information because she thinks it's
fantastic that you adopted a Greyhound
We both can go on and on and on about this as we're very passionate
about our boys and girls <g>
