We have numerous Proliant 733s and 800s around here. I have drawn up
plans to mod each case into a working toilet so they will actually have
some use in the office. The things just like to fail spectacularly and
are completely resistant to all forms of monitoring. The hip raid
controllers, the specialized overpriced scsi drives, the nonsensical
monitoring tools, they all come together in such a way so as to prevent
you from knowing there is a problem until the server is on fire and
authorities have arrived.
Don't get me wrong. I like staying employed, and those jawa junk dealer
rejects are a big part of the reason I get paid every 2 weeks. I would
never bite the hand that feeds me.
But buying a proliant for yourself or your office is like owning a swiss
army scrotum remover. Sure, it's nice to be able to say you have one,
but using it is another matter entirely.
