Question on Job References

Hey guys, when your new [potential] job calls up your old job to ask stuff about you, what kind of things do they ask?  Do they also ask for proof of my occupation there?  Like a W-2 form  or something.  And can i coordinate with my old boss too, like maybe ask him to say certain things about me?  ehehehehehehe.
