I was postulating that if some pdfs were created using different software, or a different process, that might account for the difference.

For example, in Distiller, it is possible to create a non-searchable PDF Formatted Text and Graphics (PDF Normal) style PDF  I seem to remember foggily.

Also, the version of PDF makes a big difference. Has your Ultraseek been updated to handle v1.4 PDF files? If you recently upgraded to Acrobat 5.0, this would change the PDF version in use. Maybe your google engine is newer, and can handle the new file versions.

I'm just throwing some things against the wall to give you some ideas. I have no actual knowledge about ultraseek. I am actually just upgrading to v4.0 of the verity vdk from 3.1, so I am a couple of years behind the times.

Sorry for the lack of concrete knowledge.

versions of pdfs? Different character sets?

All the pdfs are created by a small group of designers using QuarkXPress.
They are text-based layouts, not a scanned image.
