And are you sure the cable you are using is in fact a cross over?

Subject: Private Network of Two Computers

Okay, I thought this was going to be simple, in fact I thought I'd done it
before but now I'm not so sure.  Any clues would be very welcome!

I've got two Windows 2000 servers with two NICs each.  One is for the
normal network, the other is for a private connection between the two (no
switch between).  I've tried every address scheme I can think of, used a
cross-over cable (and tried a normal one in desperation) and I cannot get
it to work.  I've tested all cables, all the NICs, everything I can think
of.  No matter what, though, I can't get anything to "light up" on the NICs
connected together and it reports that the connection is unplugged.

Am I missing something simple?  Hopefully?  Ugh!

TIA...
