Yes, you can just make a link as you described. The nice thing is it works
very fast due to the small file size.

Agreed with Michael.
I do this with our users as well.
You can make a simple file link from a web page and instruct the user to
click on the link, click Open and then Yes. This will usually work.
Sometimes they will find it necessary instead to save it to their local
drive
and execute it from there by double-clicking on it.

SO just make a link on the web page?

<a href="" here...</a>

This will download the file and install it on the client?

The other consideration is that reg files are not backward compatible,
so rather than use the header "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00",
you may need to change it to REGEDIT4 if you have any Windows 98 users.

PS. Just out of curiosity why is it so important that you set the mime
types?

To force certain filles based on extensions to open in different
applications other than the default installed on the client.
Ex: By default .txt files open in WordPad I think. I want to force .txt
files to open in a different ascii editor and so on...
