XP Home as shipped won't play them either -- your box was certainly
preconfigured with a 3rd party codec. Were it I, I'd find out what it
was and then install a copy (since you already own a license).

My boss is a prepress guru. He tends to glare at people for working
across the network in Photoshop, Quark, etc. Bad karma. Photoshop
apparently tends to wank if the network connection hangs or is dropped.
Which is not to say that you've not done this successfully in the past.
I'm just passing along what I've heard.
