In a discussion on an internal mailing list on the topic of Internet
security there was mention of something called "Shibboleth". It was part of
an Internet 2 meeting. Interesting stuff. In this context, it's a means for
universities to share information about their users for access to shared
resources.

But the word was intriguing enough for me to Google it. As expected it's
Hebrew, specifically from Judges. (It was going to be either that or a made
up Cthulhu reference.)

What's curious to me is where it also gets used.

There's a sourceforge project by the name of Shibboleth that appears to be
about defining trusted users for mailing lists.

There's a paper on Ebonics.

A band.

A Thanksgiving episode of West Wing

And the most humorous, an online dictionary that has a sound clip telling
you how to pronounce it.

I'll have to see if I can add this word to my personal lexicon. Because of
the Internet 2 project I will probably end up using it in that context
anyway. It's interesting to me though that the sourceforge project appears
to be a different thing using the same name. Both opensource.

Okay, enough procrastinating.
