I was digging around on Philip Zimbardo's website and found this very
interesting article he had for download:
A Situationist Perspective on the Psychology of Evil: Understanding How Good
People Are Transformed into Perpetrators (2003)

http://www.zimbardo.com/downloads/2003%20Evil%20Chapter.pdf

While somewhat technical in places, those with some psych background
(myself, Michael, and a few others on the list) may find his analysis of the
Iraq war, the war on terror, 9/11, and suicide bombing a very interesting
analysis in terms of the social psych mechanisms that can turn supposedly
normal people into sadistic torturers or suicide bombers.
