I woudn't say the "hay-day" is over. The crazy, half-witted days of dot
com insanity are over, and with it, the market for making web sites for
wacko business models have disappeared.

There's still a lot of work out there. I currently have all I can handle.
It is a question of marketing oneself, prospecting and sales as opposed to
waiting for others to say "I've got work for you". Many developers aren't
willing to sell themselves in this fashion, it seems.

Also, there's mountains of web work in Fortune 1000 companies for those who
have enough skill-breadth to match up to a specific corporation's IT
standards. For example, you're not going to get a job as a CF developer in
a company that demands Java developers, duh. So it would seem that being
fast, flexible and agressive is the key to survival in this market.
