Computer Programmer III
Location:  U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC), Laurel, MD
Introduction: PWRC provides scientific activities that include several wildlife population monitoring programs. PWRC is directly responsible for coordinating cooperative population surveys such as the North American Breeding Bird Survey, and developing and maintaining data management tools useful for surveys conducted by a variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations, such as the Bird Point Count Database.

Responsibilities:  Johnson Controls has an open position for a Computer Programmer III to perform contract work for the USGS at PWRC.  Duties include:
� Assist in the development of application requirements and timelines for bird population monitoring databases, including the preparation of requirements documents for review by others. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternatives to be considered while application requirements are being defined.
� Develop new databases and/or modify existing databases in SQL Server 2000 software to meet the specifications of the application requirements documents. Work with program biologists to design new databases that will meet the desired functionality. Use Transact-SQL to emphasize stored procedure and trigger development and the optimization of database indexes and processes. Develop appropriate documentation for all databases for future reference by other programmers.
� Plan and develop new ColdFusion applications and/or modify existing ColdFusion applications based on the specifications defined in the requirements documents. Utilize experience with ColdFusionMX in the development of custom tags, functions, and CFCs. Use knowledge of HTML and background with software such as DreamweaverMX and/or ColdFusion Studio, _javascript_, Fusebox 4, Query Analyzer, and Enterprise Manager to develop the required web applications with an understanding of screen design issues that meet all standards including Section 508 compliance and accessibility guidelines. Develop appropriate documentation for all applications.
� Work with other programmers and biologists during beta- and live testing of all developed modules. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternative options for consideration by others. Communicate with the team to identify and resolve all potential problems.

Qualifications:  A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer science or related field is required, as well as 4 years of programming experience (which includes 2 years of independent programming) and 1 year of supervising programming personnel.  The programming experience requires demonstrable ability to develop database-driven web applications in ColdFusion and SQL Server 2000 and proficiency with the tools used to develop ColdFusion and SQL Server applications.
Starting Salary: $26.99/hr plus $2.36/hr for Health and Welfare Benefits. Full benefits package.
