Computer Programmer III
Location:  U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center 
(PWRC), Laurel, MD
Introduction: PWRC provides scientific activities that include several 
wildlife population monitoring programs. PWRC is directly responsible for 
coordinating cooperative population surveys such as the North American 
Breeding Bird Survey, and developing and maintaining data management tools 
useful for surveys conducted by a variety of governmental and 
non-governmental organizations, such as the Bird Point Count Database.

Responsibilities:  Johnson Controls has a position open immediately for a 
Computer Programmer III to perform contract work for the USGS at PWRC. 
Duties include:

�       Work with program biologists to design new and improve existing 
web interfaces to meet the desired functionality for bird population 
database applications. Document designs for implementation by programmers. 
Knowledge of Section 508 compliance and accessibility guidelines as 
applied to web applications. Use creativity and programming skills to 
develop multiple design alternatives when needed to meet application 
requirements.

�       Knowledge of HTML, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript combined with 
experience with design tools such as Macromedia Dreamweaver to develop 
accessible designs and create web forms, graphics, scripts, and other 
specialized web documents. 

�       Knowledge of ColdFusion or another scripting language (PHP, ASP, 
PERL, or comparable language) to understand how client/server databases 
interact with web interfaces. Experience with scenario development and 
usability testing of prototype web interfaces. Candidates must possess a 
strong interest in acquiring skills in some of these areas. A passing 
interest in preserving wildlife would enhance enjoyment of the position.

�       Work with programmers and biologists during usability testing and 
beta-testing of developed interfaces. Communicate with the team to 
identify and resolve potential problems.

Qualifications:  A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer science 
or related field is required, as well as demonstrated experience in web 
interface design including one year of independent front-end development 
or user interface design. Knowledge of ColdFusion or another scripting 
language is needed to understand the linkages between user interfaces and 
client/server databases.

Starting Salary: $27.62/hr plus $2.59/hr for Health and Welfare Benefits.
