BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
We're looking to bring on a Web development contractor to our team who has
experience with the following technologies:
- ColdFusion
- Javascript
- HTML/CSS
- SQL Server
You'll be using these skills to add functionality to an existing Web service
and to help maintain that service.
ABOUT US
America Learns is a relatively new, Los Angeles-based social justice
organization that has quickly become the leader in helping nonprofit reading
tutoring and mentoring programs provide superior support to their children,
volunteers and staff. In short, we help make sure that volunteer tutors and
mentors have the skill sets and knowledge they need to truly help the
children they're serving. We serve organizations nationwide reaching
thousands of children. All of our services are conducted through our Web
service, the National Literacy Volunteer Performance Measurement & Support
Network ("the Network").
The Network was designed, piloted and implemented over three years with
feedback and input from more than 300 stakeholders in 27 states and D.C. -
tutors, mentors, program managers, foundation officers, government
officials, teachers, parent advocates and others. A National Mentoring
Board of top-rate tutors, mentors, program managers and other stakeholders
oversees the development of all new Network functionality, ensuring that
what we roll out is not only useful, but user friendly. While we reach
thousands nationwide, we receive no more than 2 technical support calls
monthly. The Network is easy to use, and it will only become easier to use
over time, perhaps with your help.
The Echoing Green Foundation (www.echoinggreen.org) seed funded our
organization.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Aside from having the abovementioned technical skills, our Web Development
team members also have the following characteristics and work styles.
- Passion: It's essential that our team members have a TON of passion for
wanting to do meaningful work that improves the lives of thousands of
children nationwide. This passion not only translates into excitement about
our work, but also makes up for gaps in prior experience. We've found that
even if a Web development partner we bring on doesn't have expertise in all
of the technical capabilities mentioned above, his or her passion for our
work motivates the person to learn what has to get done and to then get the
work done.
- Solid project planning abilities: It's important to us that you are
exceptionally organized on your end around what has to get done and by when,
and that you keep us up to date on any unexpected hitches. It's also
important that you keep track of bugs that need to be fixed and make that
list available to us. It's important to note that, to date, every one of
our major technology projects has launched on time or ahead of schedule. We
intend to keep up that track record.
- Communication about how you communicate best: Web developers we bring onto
the team know how they learn best and know what types of details they need
from us when we report bugs or ask for bids on new functionality. We expect
our Web development team members to communicate these needs to us up front
to minimize time spent going back and forth about what's needed.
Payment
- We require that our Web development contractors submit fixed bids or
hourly bids with a fixed ceiling for most work. Please only submit an
