Rich,
Though I don't have a specific answer, I am pretty sure Todd H directed you
to this list via my suggestion on ACFUG's list and I feel slightly obligated
to make sure you get some help here, even if it's from a list lurker.

I have lurked on this list since it formed, and though I have never tried to
get CF on Linux working, I have seen at least one post about leaks,
crashing, and Oracle.
Per a post from Matt Liotta a little more than a month ago, you might want
to look into a certain set of "glibc patches" to solve your problem.
If that advice doesn't help, you might want to hit the list's archives at
the address in the footer...

Lots of people on this list are using RedHat...
As to the rest of your questions, you might want to check out the Linux
Reference Desk page Jesse Noller put together at Allaire.com (he's on this
list). It has installation and configuration docs for lots of Linux
platforms
http://www.allaire.com/developer/TechnologyReference/linux.cfm
It might also be worth checking out the "Securing RedHat Linux" doc on the
"Security Best Practices Articles and White Papers" page. I don't think
it's made it's way onto the Linux Reference Desk page yet...
