I was unaware that linux currently uses lightweight process for multithreading.
As far as I know in the past a pthreads library was used and a multithreaded
program ran as a single process.

Absolutly a fair assesment.  Unfortunatly we can't seem to figure out how to
reproduce the problem.  I was hoping for a temporary solution that would
prevent the other sessions from dying should one have a problem.
