I reckon thats it because the original file was authored in Homesite+ on an NT client.
I've tested again with a script created on the box itself using vi and its worked fine 
without the -w flag.

This might be it.  Right now I couldn't find any of those scripts that were giving me 
problems, but next time I find one I will check that.
