It is fairly hard to do anything practical with XML with using some
language, so all books deal have some code examples to illustrate ideas,
usually Java, but anyway check out

O'Reilly XML in a nutshell is good for an overall view.

More specific OReilly title exist for

XML Schema
XSLT
XSL-FO
XPath/Xpointer

They all overlap of course.
