Thanks you for your reply, I would have replied sooner but I got a bit over 
eager with my spam filtering.

We have actually resovled the issue by replacing the JVM that comes standard 
with cf for the sun jre 1.4.1. I have a hunch it was some sort of garbage 
collection issue between the jvm and the jdbc driver but as the problem is 
resolved I'm not going to spend to long trying to figure it out.
