We have had some great experience with selling apps through our site www.bigosoftware.com (no pun intended :) )
We do mostly ColdFusion but are working on about 4 ASP based apps that are similar in functionality to some of our CF apps. As far as marketing goes, I would say the best success we have had is with our AuthorizeNet gateway interface tag. Its been on the market for about a year now and we get so much exposure for it through AuthorizeNet and also the other site I developed at CFCustomTags.com. The other really good experience I have had is with the CF Linkmanager product we have. With web directories being on the rise you could target basically any web site owner with CF and make a sale. Everyone wants directories, be it web sites, addresses, emails, etc. As for pricing, well its kind of a hit or miss. When I started selling CF Authorize over a year ago, I started it off at $39 I think it was. After watching the market and its sales I know I can now get $125 from the same tag that sold for $39 last year. We have actually had increase in sales for that one since the price increase. I think it has a lot to do with perceived value: more expensive it is, the better it is. The other thing we are trying is a developer discount program. Lots of web developers, both firms and freelancers, buy our software at a discounted price and resell it at whatever price they want to their customers. Besides who wants to reinvent the wheel if its already there. Also you wouldn't believe with a name like Big O Software how many other programmers out there are always emailing and asking me the meaning behind it. So with a name like that, programmers might just click on the name just to see what it is (If you don't get this never mind).
