I have IE 6.0.26 and they both worked fine for me except for the visited
thing which you mentioned you purposely left out of the example.

In my version of IE6 (6.0.2800.1106), the one on the left starts out as a
plain hyperlink (wrong) and only changes to white text inside a colored box
during mouse over.
