Dear All,

In July I proposed standard names for a number of cloud, aerosol and
radiation quantities for CMIP5.  Jonathan has indicated (via email) that
he is content with the proposed names.  I have not received any further
comments, so the following names are now accepted for inclusion in the
standard name table:

convection_time_fraction; 1
shallow_convection_time_fraction; 1
net_downward_shortwave_flux_at_sea_water_surface; W m-2
diffuse_downwelling_shortwave_flux_in_air; W m-2
diffuse_downwelling_shortwave_flux_in_air_assuming_clear_sky; W m-2
effective_radius_of_cloud_liquid_water_particle_at_liquid_water_cloud_to
p; m
number_concentration_of_cloud_liquid_water_particles_in_air_at_liquid_wa
ter_cloud_top; m-3
number_concentration_of_ice_crystals_in_air_at_ice_cloud_top; m-3
mass_concentration_of_biomass_burning_dry_aerosol_in_air;kg m-3
number_concentration_of_ambient_aerosol_in_air; m-3
number_concentration_of_nucleation_mode_ambient_aerosol_in_air; m-3
number_concentration_of_coarse_mode_ambient_aerosol_in_air; m-3
number_concentration_of_cloud_liquid_water_particles_in_air; m-3
number_concentration_of_ice_crystals_in_air; m-3
surface_diffuse_downwelling_shortwave_flux_in_air; W m-2.

Two of the proposed names still require clarification.  I am seeking
advice on the definitions and units of the quantities with CMIP5 long
names of:
'Total Direct Emission Rate of SO4'
'Ambient Aerosol Extinction Optical Thickness at 550 nm'.
