Hi all -

Just to clarify, NetCDF 'classic' and CF are already endorsed by NASA's
SPG, and NetCDF4 is at the review stage.

As far as I know, NetCDF's standing as a NASA-endorsed standard
is not in question at all; I don't believe the SPG ever removes a
standard from its list.

Cheers - Nan

Dear all,

I hope some of you will weigh-in concerning use of netCDF as a NASA data standard. See survey below.

Best regards,

Subject: [Spg-announce] Request for Comments: NASA use of netCDF-4 file format with HDF5

NASA Data Systems Stakeholders:

The Earth Science Data Systems Working Group (ESDSWG) for Standards is conducting a review of the network Common Data Form version 4, which uses the Hierarchical Data Format version 5 as a storage layer (netCDF-4 / HDF5), for possible adoption as a community standard.

The scope of the present review is the “implementation experience” and/or the "operational suitability" of the netCDF-4 specification. We have forwarded these questions to you because you are a NASA stakeholder who is likely to have experience with netCDF-4. Please respond with comments as relevant.

If you have experience in using the netCDF-4 format (e.g., as a data provider, data consumer, or software developer or user), or in supporting software tools for netCDF-4, we'd like to hear from you. If you have tried to work with the netCDF-4 format but abandoned the effort for whatever reason, we'd like to hear about that experience as well. We'd also like to hear from those with experiences with other self-describing data formats about the appropriateness of the proposed specification.

The Standards Process Group is charged with recommending data systems standards that will enhance interoperation of Earth science data systems within the agency and with partnering organizations. We do this through open review of standards submitted by community stakeholders for endorsement by NASA. It is absolutely essential that members of communities that may be impacted by proposed standards provide input in this process.

Suggested comment areas for netCDF-4 are attached. The technical description of netCDF-4/HDF5 for your review can be found here:

http://www.esdswg.org/spg/rfc/esds-rfc-022

Comments should be sent before July 8 to <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>>.

Thank you

Richard Ullman
For the SPG
