Karl-
The Total Totals is the sum of the Vertical Totals and the Cross Totals:

So there are other non-total totals. ;-)

p.s. But I still wonder what "total totals" could mean.

Dear Karl,
Re: 1) below, I can't specifically remember if we had this discussion,
but the first "total" of "total totals" is actually necessary because
the common name for this quantity is the "total totals index." During
the dialogue on the board a few months ago, we all agreed that for
some of these uniquely named stability indices, the convention in
naming these in CF would be "atmosphere_stability" + common name for
the quantity. So, that's how
"atmosphere_stability_total_totals_index" came about. Sincerely,
Jonathan Wrotny

Dear all,
Nice summary, Alison.
Apologies for having not been engaged in the discussion, and please
ignore this email if a discussion of the following points has already
taken place:
1) atmosphere_stability_total_totals_index . Is the first "total"
really necessary? Is there such thing as a non-total "totals index"?
2) In the following names, is there an expectation that
"harmonic_period" will always be provided along with the phase and
amplitude? If not, then the period should probably be part of the
phase and amplitude standard names.
phase_of_global_average_sea_level_change (degree)
harmonic_period (s)
amplitude_of_global_average_sea_level_change (m)

Dear All,
The standard name table will shortly be updated. A full list of the planned
changes is given at the end of this message.
There remain approximately 80 standard names in the pipeline at various stages
of discussion and agreement, plus a proposal for adding a section on satellite
standard names to the Guidelines document. I will aim to do another update to
the standard name table in 2-3 weeks time to try and catch up as far as
possible on all agreed names.
Best wishes,
Alison

cyanobacteria; its presence is essential for photosynthesis to take place' to
'Chlorophylls are the green pigments found in most plants, algae and
