Hello,

Our team is working on gridded products (EASE-Grid 2.0) that indicate surface
snow extent, derived from several different sources. CF compliance is one of
our project goals. Initially I thought that surface_snow_binary_mask would be
an appropriate standard name for our terrestrial snow variables. However, the
definition explicitly states the values of 1 and 0 are used with this standard
name.

Here's an excerpt of data flags in each pixel of our terrestrial snow product,
which are more complex.

Layer 1: Fused snow extent
1000 - MODIS, Passive Microwave (PM), and IMS report snow
1001 - MODIS and PM report snow
1002 - MODIS and IMS report snow
1003 - PM and IMS report snow
1004 - MODIS only reports snow
1005 - PM only reports snow
1006 - IMS only reports snow
2000 - Snow free land
4000 - Ocean

Layer 2: IMS snow extent
1000 - Snow covered land
1001 - Ocean converted to snow covered land (result of a consistent land/ocean
binary mask applied to all source products)
2000 - Snow free land
2001 - Ocean converted to snow free land
4000 - Ocean
4001 - Snow covered land converted to ocean
4002 - Snow free land converted to ocean

What options do we have to achieve CF compliance? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Kind regards,
Tom
