If there is no standard_name for your variable, the CF conventions recommend (do not require) that you set the long_name attribute (conventions document section 3.2, conformance document section 3)

The flag_meanings and flag_values attributes may be useful with your data, to
make them more self-describing. Those attributes are a way to provide the
translation of your codes into language.
