Dear All,

I am proposing five new standard names on behalf of Bernd Funke for the CMIP6
DAMIP.

1. CMIP6 short name jo2.
photolysis_rate_of_molecular_oxygen (s-1)
' "Photolysis" is a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken
down by photons. The "reaction rate" is the rate at which the reactants of a
chemical reaction form the products. The chemical formula for molecular oxygen
is O2.'

2. CMIP6 short name jo3.
photolysis_rate_of_ozone (s-1)
' "Photolysis" is a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken
down by photons. The "reaction rate" is the rate at which the reactants of a
chemical reaction form the products. The chemical formula for ozone is O3. The
IUPAC name for ozone is trioxygen. The quantity with standard name
photolysis_rate_of_ozone is the rate of photolytic loss of ozone, including all
possible photolysis channels to form ground state atomic oxygen (O3P ) and
excited (singlet D) atomic oxygen (O1D). Photolysis to the excited state only
has the standard name photolysis_rate_of_ozone_to_1D_oxygen_atom.'

3. CMIP6 short name oxloss.
tendency_of_mole_concentration_of_ox_in_air_due_to_chemical_destruction (mol
m-3 s-1)
'The phrase "tendency_of_X" means derivative of X with respect to time. Mole
concentration means number of moles per unit volume, also called "molarity",
and is used in the construction "mole_concentration_of_X_in_Y", where X is a
material constituent of Y. A chemical or biological species denoted by X may be
described by a single term such as "nitrogen" or a phrase such as
"nox_expressed_as_nitrogen". The term "ox" means a combination of three radical
species containing 1 or 3 oxygen atoms: O + O1d + O3. The specification of a
physical process by the phrase "due_to_" process means that the quantity named
is a single term in a sum of terms which together compose the general quantity
named by omitting the phrase. "Chemical destruction" means the result of all
chemical reactions within the medium (here, atmosphere) that remove a certain
amount of a particular species from the medium.'

4. CMIP6 short name oxprod.
tendency_of_mole_concentration_of_ox_in_air_due_to_chemical_and_photolytic_production
 (mol m-3 s-1)
The phrase "chemical and photolytic production"
means the result of all chemical and photolytic reactions within the medium
(here, atmosphere) that produce a certain amount of the particular species.'

5. CMIP6 short name vmrox.
mole_fraction_of_ox_in_air (1)
'Mole fraction is used in the construction "mole_fraction_of_X_in_Y", where X
is a material constituent of Y. A chemical species denoted by X may be
described by a single term such as "nitrogen" or a phrase such as
"nox_expressed_as_nitrogen". The term "ox" means a combination of three radical
species containing 1 or 3 oxygen atoms: O + O1d + O3.'

In addition, Martin has suggested we modify the definition of the existing name
photolysis_rate_of_ozone_to_1D_oxygen_atom (s-1) to provide a cross-reference
to the new name proposed in (1).
' "Photolysis" is a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken
down by photons. The "reaction rate" is the rate at which the reactants of a
chemical reaction form the products. The chemical formula for ozone is O3. The
IUPAC name for ozone is trioxygen. "1D oxygen atom" means the singlet D state,
an excited state, of the oxygen atom. The combined photolysis rate of ozone to
both excited and ground state oxygen atoms has the standard name
photolysis_rate_of_ozone.'

My own feeling is that these proposals all look okay, but any questions or
comments to improve the names would be welcome.

Best wishes,
Alison
