Hi.

In addition to Andrew Saulter's excellent points, 'air_gap' is far too generic. 'Air gap' is a term in computer security, plumbing, and electrical motors, to name only a few of the many vocabularies in which it is found. Please add more specific detail about the domain to the name.

Grace and peace,

Jim

Hi Aaron,

I’d agree that air_gap would be a very useful parameter to include. Following up on Andrew Barna’s question, I did wonder if it is possible to make this somewhat more generic (e.g. air_gap is also a standard term in oil platform design and could, potentially, be used across a wider set of wave overtopping metrics).

If that makes sense, it might also be worth adding a standard name for ‘freeboard’? To my understanding the difference is that freeboard works with an idealised still water level, whereas air gap is an instantaneous parameter (i.e. associated with the maximum wave crest height)?

In both cases there may be a need for some form of auxiliary coordinate specifying the vertical datum that is being used?

Sorry – only questions at this point, not solutions. As with Andrew this is on the edge of my expertise…

Regards

Andy

Hi Aaron,

This one is way outside my field, but was interesting, these questions are my own curiosity.

Is "low steel" an accepted term in whatever field you are in? I was handing a hard time finding it used outside "low carbon". Does this term apply to bridges that aren't made out of steel?

Does this only apply to the intended navigable portion of the waterway? if yes, how about "instantaneous_navigational_clearance" or "instantaneous_guide_clearances"? I found these terms in the USCG Bridge Programs website, without the "instantaneous" part.

    Hi,

I haven't found an existing CF standard name for this concept
(nor a previous discussion), so I am proposing a new standard
    name, as below:

    Proposed Standard Name: air_gap

    Canonical Units: m

Description: The air gap is the clearance (vertical distance)
between the instantaneous height of the designated low steel value
of a bridge and the instantaneous sea surface height.  The height
of the designated low steel value of a bridge may change due to
    traffic or other loads.

Note: I did make some effort to review existing standard name
patterns, but the results (below) were coming out rather long,
which may be an impediment toward understanding and adoption, but
I include them here for completeness:

height_difference_between_instantaneous_designated_low_steel_value_of_bridge_and_instantaneous_sea_surface_height

    -or-

height_difference_between_instantaneous_designated_low_steel_value_of_bridge_and_instantaneous_sea_level

The air gap is used for safety of navigation into and out of
    ports with bridges.

    Cordially,

    Aaron
