 I don't think it's so much about being too restrictive; if wind east and
 north share a detection_minimum there would be no problem using the same
 units for all 3 variables (east, north, and detection) and this could be
 left to the data writer to ensure sensible groupings.

 The problem comes with the standard name table, where there's no way to
 assign canonical units to a variable named detection_minimum, which would
 need to take its units from the data variable to which it was attached.
