 Hi Jim,

I think you are using a stronger definition of CRS than I am. I'm using
the ISO definition, which basically says that a CRS needs a reference
(datum), the direction away from this reference and the unit of measure
(hence "depth below local sea level" is a fully-fledged CRS). I think you
are referring to a fully geographic/geodetic CRS, which is clearly more
precise of course (and more useful).

(I think we will find that not all CRSs in CF are fully
geographic/geodetic, for example a vertical CRS based on pressure. It's
still useful though and it doesn't mean there is no CRS at all. Any
coordinate without a CRS is pretty much useless.)

The GeoAPI documentation is based on ISO and is instructive, as is an
inspection of the subclasses (types) of CRS:

http://www.geoapi.org/3.0/javadoc/org/opengis/referencing/crs/CoordinateReferenceSystem.html.
(The GeoAPI list is not exhaustive of course.)

 Best wishes,
 Jon
