I think we are making good progress on this. I checked the [Appendix A](http://cfconventions.org/Data/cf-conventions/cf-conventions-1.7/cf-conventions.html#attribute-appendix) table of CF attributes and I think the following attributes can be allowed to hold `string` values as well as `char`:
* `comment` * `external_variables` * `_FillValue` * `flag_meanings` * `flag_values` * `history` * `institution` * `long_name` * `references` * `source` * `title` All the other attributes should hold `char` values to maximize backward compatibility. -- You are receiving this because you are subscribed to this thread.
