Dear David I'm sorry to say I'm confused now about what you're proposing. Also, by "proscribed" do you mean "prescribed", which is the opposite?
It seems to me that it's simplest not to add a third exception after all. That means auxiliary coordinates which use the compressed dimension must themselves be compressed, and hence cannot be shared with data variables where those dimensions are not compressed.
