@JonathanGregory I'm thinking of existing files (built pre - CF-1.8) that have time variables marked by the **`gregorian`** calendar. They may well not match the new definition, but people won't likely look back to CF-1.7 or earlier to see the difference between the old and new definitions. It's the existing mixed population that concerns me.
