Hi Tim, The reason that `time: point` was accepted because `time` is a standard name, which is always a valid cell method axis if there is no applicable coordinate variable or scalar coordinate variable with the same name ([7.3.4](http://cfconventions.org/Data/cf-conventions/cf-conventions-1.8/cf-conventions.html#cell-methods-no-coordinates)).
I think that your analysis about `lat` and `lon` is correct.
